Marion Van Etten 1926-2021
Marion McCrory Van Etten, 94, of Pensacola, Florida, passed away peacefully Friday evening, January 15, 2021 surrounded by her children at her bedside. She was born in Georgiana, Alabama on September 30, 1926 to Elwood E. McCrory and Clara Corine McClain McCrory. She started her career as a reporter and photographer at the Pensacola News-Journal where she met her husband, Gilbert Lamar Van Etten, who worked as a Pressman. She went on to become the Executive Assistant to the Principals at Pensacola High School where she was employed for 30 years. She retired June 30, 1992 and became an active volunteer at her church, Myrtle Grove Baptist Church, where she has been an active member since 1956. She was also a very active volunteer at West Florida Hospital and enjoyed travelling, playing cards with her friends, and was very active with her secretarial association, Escambia Association of Educational Office Personnel, where she was President from 1990-1991, and the Florida Association of Educational Office Personnel, where she was President from 1982-1983. Being around all children brought the most joy to her life! Marion was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother, Randall Elvis McCrory, and her sister, Ava Marie McCrory Cantrell. She is survived by her sister, Vinona Hope McCrory Glaze, her son, Jeffrey Laurence Van Etten (Anita M. Van Etten), her daughter, Christine Van Etten Blackmon (Donald Lee Blackmon), her seven grandchildren, Eleanor Shell (Blake), Tiffany Clayton (David), Katie Van Etten (Mandy), Angela Kennedy (Daniel), Drew Blackmon (Tanna), Cody Blackmon (Ashley), Casi Blackmon, eleven great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Donald and Christine would like to say a special thank you to Jeff and Anita for allowing Mom to live with them and providing such loving care to her for the past four years. The family would like to thank Susan with Home Instead for her excellent care of Mom and Francis Walding for taking Mom to all of her church events over the past four years. The family would also like to thank Covenant Care Hospice for supporting Mom and the family through this journey, with a special thank you to her caregivers, Rowena, Samantha, Crystal, Susan, Rolanda and Lindsay. Services for Marion will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2021 at Pensacola Memorial Gardens. Family visitation will begin at noon and visitation for friends will begin at 1 p.m. Service will be at 2 p.m. and will be officiated by Brother Chris Larsen, Minister of Education & Administration
